Iargo Springs Interpretive Site, River Road Scenic Byway, Oscoda Township, MI 48750, Phone: (989) 739-0728.  Iargo Springs [Natural Attractions], 17 miles west of Oscoda. Natural spring running into Au Sable River. Steep drop-off from roadway to spring. Located on the River Road Scenic Byway, this site, considered a holy place by native Americans, offers a breathtaking view of the AuSable River Valley from a 30' high observation deck. For the adventurous, walk down 294 steps and enter a mystical place where underground springs come together and form cold water streams. Iosco County Historical Museum [Museums], 405 West Bay Street, East Tawas, MI 48730, Phone: (989) 362-8911. We are an area historical museum.If you have ancestors who grew up here we have a library of historical facts and naming early pioneering families. Must have been in area twenty years at least. Funeral records of former funeral home. History of the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad started in East Tawas by J. D. Hawkes who built the house our museum is located in. Also tells of lumbering boom days for entire county. Also artifacts from both.

Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center [Memorial to Lumbermen], Junction of River and Monument Roads, Huron-Manistee National Forests, Oscoda Township, MI 48750, Phone: (989) 362-8961, This huge bronze memorial to Michigan's lumbering era sits on a high bluff overlooking the sparkling waters of the Au Sable River since 1932. Interpretive signs and exhibits tell the story of moving logs from the forests to the mills. Children enjoy climbing the log jam and using the crosscut saw. For those willing to hike 260 steps to the edge of the Au Sable, they can board the Wanigan, a replica of the floating cook shacks that followed the river drives. Fact Sheet  Map

River Road Scenic Byway [National Scenic Highway], Huron-Manistee National Forests, River Road, Oscoda - Hale, Oscoda, MI 48750, Phone: (989) 739-0728.  The twenty-two mile River Road Scenic Byway extends westward from Lake Huron to the Huron-Manistee National Forests.  It parallels the historic Riviere aux Sable (River of Sand).  The Au Sable River provided a westward link for Native Americans and French Fur Traders.  Later it became a major transportation route, taking Michigan’s white pine from the inland forest to the sawmill towns on Lake Huron.  Today the Au Sable River is still a major waterway, with six hydroelectric dams providing power and water recreation.  Traveler will enjoy lush forests and breathtaking vistas fro high banks along the river.  Map

Tawas Point Lighthouse [Lighthouse], 686 Tawas Beach Road, East Tawas, MI 48730, Phone: (989) 362-5041. Tawas point Lighthouse, in operation since 1876, and now part of Tawas Point State Park, is a fascinating attraction for maritime buffs. Tawas Point is also a mecca for birdwatchers, especially in the migration seasons of spring and fall. Tawas Point also offers spectacular views of sunrises over Lake Huron and sunsets over Tawas Bay. Guided tours are available. Also, a gift shop.

Yankee Air Force Museum [Museum], Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport, Oscoda, MI 48750, Phone: (989)739-7555. Our division aviation museum is located at the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport, (formerly Paul B. Wurtsmith Air Base). The museum consists of flyable and static aircraft displays, related artifacts and equipment, memorabilia, and a library for research and public information. Tours of the museum are available to school groups and the general public. Visit the gift shop with a wide variety of memorabelia reflecting the history and nostalgia of aviation.
